Nodiadau / Notes

Remember a soft mutation occurs after yn in all adjectives. This yn contracts to  ‘n after a vowel.
The exceptions to the rule are the letters rh and ll.
If you use a number of adjectives to describe something, mutate the first adjective only.

Mae e'n las, pinc a melyn (It's blue, pink and yellow)

Remember a triggers an aspirate mutation,  t  >  th,  p  >  ph,  c  >  ch.

Mae e'n las, du a choch. (It's blue, black and red)

You can also repeat the yn in a list of adjectives. If you do, then remember you will need to add the mutation.

Mae e'n fawr, yn ddiddorol ac yn gyflym (It's large, interesting and fast)

Mae e'n fawr (It's large)
Mae e'n hyfryd (It's lovely)
Mae e'n gyflym (It's fast)
Mae e'n ddu (It's black)

Dyw e ddim yn ddiddorol (It  isn't interesting)
Dyw e ddim yn olau (It  isn't light)
Dyw e ddim yn fach (It  isn't  small)
Dyw e ddim yn goch (It isn't red)

Ydy e'n ddiddorol? (Is it interesting?)
Ydy e'n wyrdd? (Is it green?)
Ydy e'n dywyll? (Is it dark?)

Ydy (Yes) Nac ydy (No)

Gwrywaidd / Masculine

Remember, most Welsh nouns are either feminine or masculine.

Beth yw lliw car Jac? (What colour is Jac's car?)
Beth yw lliw'r car? (What colour is the car?)

'Car' is masculine, therefore we use 'e' (he, it)

Mae e'n felyn (It's yellow) Mae e'n las (It's blue) Mae e'n goch (It's red) Mae e'n wyrdd (It's green) Mae e'n ddu (It's black) Mae e'n wyn (It's white) Mae e'n llwyd (It's grey) Mae e'n binc (It's pink) Mae e'n frown (It's brown) Mae e'n borffor (It's purple) Mae e'n oren (It's orange)

Benywaidd / Feminine

Remember, most Welsh nouns are either feminine or masculine.

Beth yw lliw cot Mair? (What colour is Mair's coat?)
Beth yw lliw'r got? (What colour is the coat?)

(y / yr / ‘r  - triggers a soft mutation in feminine singular nouns, e.g. cot) ‘Cot' is feminine, therefore we use 'hi' (she)

Mae hi'n felyn (It's yellow) Mae hi'n las (It's blue) Mae hi'n goch (It's red) Mae hi'n wyrdd (It's green) Mae hi'n ddu (It's black) Mae hi'n wyn (It's white) Mae hi'n llwyd (It's grey) Mae hi'n binc (It's pink) Mae hi'n frown (It's brown) Mae hi'n borffor (It's purple) Mae hi'n oren (It's orange)
