CHI / TI
We have two words in Welsh which mean 'you' – chi and ti.
We use chi in formal situations, with strangers, older people and in the plural form.
Ti is used in informal situations with friends, family members, colleagues and with children.
YN = IN
The preposition YN, is the equivalent to the English IN.
This YN causes a nasal mutation and does not abbreviate to 'n. This YN also changes its form to sound like the mutation it creates, e.g.
E.G. YNG NGHAERDYDD (IN CARDIFF), YNG NGWAELOD Y SACH, (AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SACK).
C > NGH, |
YNG NGHAERFYRDDIN (CAERFYRDDIN CARMARTHEN). |
B > M, |
YM MANGOR (BANGOR). |
P > MH, |
YM MHWLLHELI (PWLLHELI) |
D > N, |
YN NINBYCH (DINBYCH DENBIGH) |
G > NG, |
YNG NGWENT (GWENT). |
T > NH, |
YN NHREGARON (TREGARON). |
YN
YN is used in two other situations. In Welsh, in simple sentences, the verb usually occupies the first main position in neutral sentences, followed by the subject and then the noun/adjective (complement).
In a sentence where the main verb is any form of the verb BOD, (E.G. Mae, Dydy….ddim…, Rwyt) YN is placed before a noun or an adjective that tells us more about the subject of the sentence. This YN links the verb with the following noun or adjective.
YN should be placed in front of all nouns and adjectives describing that subject or noun.
RWYF + I + YN + GANWR (I AM A SINGER) |
MAE + MYFYRWYR + YN + DLAWD (STUDENTS ARE POOR) |
MAE + SIÂN + YN + HAPUS (SIÂN IS HAPPY) |
RWYT + TI + YN + DRIST (YOU ARE SAD) |
RWYT + TI + YN + DDYN (YOU ARE A MAN) |
MAE + E + YN + ARDDWR (HE IS A GARDENER) |
A FORM OF THE VERB 'BOD' + SUBJECT + YN + ADJECTIVE / NOUN |
This YN causes a soft mutation, except in words beginning with the letters 'll' and 'rh'.
E.G. YN DDYN (DYN = MAN)
YN FERCH (MERCH = GIRL)
YN GYFLYM (CYFLYM = QUICK)
YN DRWM (TRWM = HEAVY)
YN LLAWEN (HAPPY)
YN LLWYDDIANNUS (SUCCESSFUL)
When YN is placed in front of adjectives to answer the questions:
they form adverbs.
Often, but not always, they correspond to adding -ly to the end of an English adjective.
CYFLYM = QUICK |
YN GYFLYM = QUICKLY |
CERDDOROL = MUSICAL |
YN GERDDOROL = MUSICALLY |
CYHOEDDUS = PUBLIC |
YN GYHOEDDUS = PUBLICLY |
GOFALUS = CAREFUL |
YN OFALUS = CAREFULLY |
The second use for the word YN is used before verb-nouns (verb-noun particle). This YN links the subject to the verb. This YN does not trigger a mutation, e.g.
MAE + E + YN + GWEITHIO (HE IS WORKING) |
MAE + GARETH + YN + RHEDEG (GARETH IS RUNNING) |
DYW + MRS JONES DDIM + YN + CADW'N HEINI (MRS JONES DOESN'T KEEP FIT) |
VERB (BOD) + SUBJECT + YN + VERB-NOUN |
YN + ADJECTIVE = SOFT MUTATION |
MAE'R BACHGEN YN DAL (TAL) (THE BOY IS TALL) |
YN + NOUN = SOFT MUTATION |
MAE'R BACHGEN YN GAWR (CAWR) (THE BOY IS A GIANT) |
YN + VERB = NO MUTATION |
MAE'R BACHGEN YN CANU (THE BOY IS SINGING) |
